Reset, Recharge & Get Back Into Routine

A gentle guide to feeling good again after the summer holidays

There’s something lovely about summer holidays: later mornings, long lunches, spontaneous treats, meals out, and days that don’t need much of a schedule.

But when the holiday comes to an end, getting back into your usual routine can feel surprisingly difficult. You might be feeling sluggish, out of sync with your normal eating habits, or simply craving a bit more structure.

The good news? You don’t need a dramatic “detox” or a strict reset.

Instead, think of this time as an opportunity to gently reconnect with the habits that help you feel your best.

Start with your routine, not restriction

After a summer of relaxed schedules, the temptation can be to compensate by skipping meals, cutting out treats, or starting an overly restrictive diet.

Resist the urge.

Your body doesn’t need punishing, it needs consistency.

Start by bringing back regular mealtimes, a sensible sleep routine and some everyday movement. Within a few days, these simple anchors can make a big difference to how you feel.

Get back to balanced meals

Rather than focusing on what you should remove, think about what you can add.

Aim for meals that combine:

  • Protein to keep you satisfied and support muscle health

  • Fibre-rich carbohydrates such as wholegrains, potatoes, oats and pulses

  • Plenty of vegetables and fruit for vitamins, minerals and fibre

  • Healthy fats such as nuts, seeds, olive oil and avocado

  • Fluids, particularly water, throughout the day

You don’t need every meal to be perfect. A balanced pattern across the day—and week—is what matters.

Make healthy choices easy

One of the easiest ways to get back on track is to make your environment work for you.

Stock the kitchen with simple ingredients you genuinely enjoy. Keep fruit visible and ready to eat. Prepare a few basics ahead of time, such as cooked grains, chopped vegetables, boiled eggs or a homemade dressing.

And don’t underestimate the power of having a few reliable meals you can make when you’re tired or short on time.

Healthy eating doesn’t have to mean complicated recipes.

Bring movement back gently

If your summer routine involved less exercise than usual, there’s no need to jump straight into an intense workout programme.

Start with something manageable.

A daily walk, a short strength session, cycling to work, stretching in the morning or simply being more active throughout the day can all help you reconnect with movement.

Focus on consistency rather than intensity. The goal is to make movement feel like a normal part of your routine again.

Prioritise sleep

Late summer evenings and relaxed holiday mornings can easily shift your body clock.

If your sleep schedule has drifted, gradually move back towards your usual bedtime and wake up time. A calming evening routine, less screen time before bed and getting some natural daylight earlier in the day can also help.

Good nutrition and good sleep go hand in hand. When you’re well rested, it’s often easier to make nourishing choices and stay active.

Don’t forget the enjoyment

Getting “back on track” shouldn’t mean giving up everything you enjoyed over the summer.

Keep the meals out. Keep the weekend brunch. Keep the occasional ice cream.

Wellness isn’t about eating perfectly or following rules without exception. It’s about finding a way of eating and living that feels sustainable and enjoyable, most of the time.

Your post-holiday reset

Instead of asking, “How quickly can I undo everything I did on holiday?”, try asking:

“What would help me feel more energised, nourished and like myself again?”

Maybe it’s cooking more meals at home. Maybe it’s drinking more water, getting back to regular breakfasts, going for an evening walk or simply getting to bed a little earlier.

Choose a couple of small habits and build from there.

A fresh start doesn’t have to be dramatic

The end of summer can be a natural moment to reset your routine, but you don’t need to start over.

Take the best parts of your holiday, slower meals, time outdoors, social connection and enjoyment and combine them with the structure that helps you feel your best day to day.

No detox. No guilt. No all-or-nothing thinking. Just a gentle return to habits that nourish you.

Here’s to a healthy, happy and energising start to the season ahead. 🌿
